With finals upon us, it is easy to become caught up in the tense and serious atmosphere that projects, papers and tests create.
Feeling burnt out might be the perfect excuse to get your friends or favorite classmates together for a movie night and loosen up before “locking in” for finals.
Here are some comedy movies to help you reset this weekend.
“Jawbreaker” (1999)
If you celebrated April Fool’s Day and are already missing prank season, “Jawbreaker” is destined to entertain.
In this movie, three teenage girls need to cover up the murder of one of their friends after a prank goes wrong. The film was originally slated to be a horror film but was instead developed into a campy, dark comedy viewers love today. The 1999 movie is barely an hour and a half, making it perfect for a fun study break.
“The Big Lebowski” (1998)
A popular favorite and cult classic, “The Big Lebowski” follows Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski (Jeff Bridges) and the shenanigans that ensue when he is mistaken for a millionaire with the same name as him. Beloved for its ridiculous dream sequences, memorable dialogue and recognizable “Westerley Men’s Sweater,” “The Big Lebowski” is a classic film and a must-watch-at-least-once kind of comedy.
“21 Jump Street” (2012)
“21 Jump Street” is a shameless favorite. Sure, it’s ridiculous and even low-brow, but that’s also part of this movie’s charm. With well known actors like Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, “21 Jump Street” is an action film with a comedic twist where two police officers go undercover at a high school to prevent a new drug from spreading amongst the youth.
Go into it with an open mind and embrace the absurdity — and yes, watch “22 Jump Street” afterward.
“The Death of Stalin” (2017)
For history buffs, “The Death of Stalin” may be a fun night to flex knowledge of random facts about the Soviet dictator, Joseph Stalin, to your friends.
For the rest of us, the film is about the political power struggles that followed Stalin’s death in 1953. “The Death of Stalin” is both entertaining and, surprisingly, somewhat educational. Where the film really shines is in the comedic performances of the cast.
Even President Barack Obama included “The Death of Stalin” on his 2018 list of favorite films. The film was also banned in Russia, along with most members of the Eurasian Economic Union, if that feeds into any intrigue.
“Sonic 3” (2024)
As of recently, the Five Nights At Freddy’s movie and the Minecraft movie have received a lot of hype from fans, but where is the love for the nostalgic franchise that is Sonic?
Though some may be turned off by the Sonic the Hedgehog movies since the controversy surrounding the “ugly” design of the main character a few years ago, what better excuse to procrastinate final essays is there than getting around to the Sonic film series?
Witness the reason why Jim Carrey returned to acting and listen for Keanu Reeves’ voice Shadow the Hedgehog in this third installment of the movie franchise.
Whether you’re in the mood for dark comedy, campy satire, or chaotic action, there’s something on this list for everyone. So microwave some popcorn and find a cozy blanket, your brain will thank you when it comes time to get back to studying.
